Coronavirus Update: Italy Sets A New Grisly Record

Italy, in the 8th night of a country-wide lockdown in an attempt to curb the spread of the Novel corona virus woke up to find that during the night almost 800 people had succumbed to the disease as new case numbers climbed over 6000. The upward swing has been going on over the past several days with 675 deaths Friday, 427 Saturday and an astonishing 798 over the past 24 hours.
Italy has been hit exceptionally hard by the virus declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization and currently present in over 100 countries around the world including the US. Hospitals in Italy report hospitals being overwhelmed creating an atmosphere where doctors are employing catastrophic triage, judging patients by selected criteria such as age, likelihood of surviving, productive years left. An example would be deciding who should get one of the few ventilators available. Does it go to the 85 year old man with heart disease, high blood pressure or the 35 year old mother of 4 children without comorbidities.
As mentioned above the country is in lockdown where everyone is confined to their homes. Still cases and deaths have continued to rise at a rapid pace. Explanations include families locked together in homes where 1 member has been affected and thus goes on to infect the entire family to a mutation not discovered yet but which attacks its victims much more easily and aggressively.
It will be an uneasy night here as the population awaits tomorrows release of the numbers of dead and the new infections.
