Italy Under Siege: A Voice From Inside The Hot Zone


  • Just finished a message session with an old friend from The Bronx's Little Italy who returned back to the homeland about 30 years ago. He said:



That while some doctors are having to deal with the situation of choosing who is treated and who is not, it is mostly occurring mostly in the hard hit region of Lombardy in the North. Central and Southern Italy are seeing less infections;

That a hospital in Castellammare was closed after a woman in labor was brought to the hospital and subsequently tested positive for Covis 19. Much of the hospital were thus infected and brought down by

the virus;

In Nola the head of the Covid 19 ward had fever but continued to see patients. He was subsequently found to have the virus and possibly infected thousands;


Many of the clinics the nation provides millions of dollars a year to provide local medical care cannot do anything as far as Covid 19 is concerned so everyone who believes they need medical care ends up going to the hospital;


In Napoli where he lives, the uniqueness of being quarantined is starting to ware off and that many have just resigned themselves to the situation;



He had to go but we both promised that we would keep our phones on and that we could each reach one another at any time, da or night. I would keep him apprised of what was happening in the US and he would keep me informed about conditions in Italy.
